Finding the Balance Between Summer Memories and Running a Creative Business

August Update Piero

If you’ve ever wondered what August looks like in our world, imagine this: a camera battery charging on the kitchen side, a football bag by the front door, a dog waiting for her morning walk, and two boys asking what’s planned for the day. A calendar full of client shoots, editing deadlines and meetings squeezed in between family adventures. Welcome to August!

Why Summer Balance Matters for Creative Families

As a husband-and-wife creative team, summer is always a bit of a balancing act. School holidays bring opportunities to slow down, make memories and spend quality time together, but they don’t mean our clients’ businesses stop needing fresh content. In fact, for many of them, summer is one of their busiest seasons.

Over the years, we’ve learned that balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about planning intentionally and giving ourselves permission to be present, wherever we are.

Family Run Creative Business

Running a Creative Business Doesn’t Mean Missing Family Life

One of the biggest reasons we built our business the way we have is because family matters. We want to be there for football tournaments, spontaneous ice cream stops, seaside walks, theme park days and the little moments that often become the memories you treasure most.

Working Smarter, Not Harder

That doesn’t mean switching work off completely. It means working smarter. Our typical week looks like:

  • Some mornings start with editing before the rest of the house is awake
  • Some afternoons are reserved for family days out
  • Evenings might be spent planning upcoming shoots or replying to enquiries once the house has settled down

It’s not always perfectly balanced, but it’s balanced in a way that works for us.

Planning Creates Freedom

People often assume creativity thrives on spontaneity. In reality, the opposite is usually true. The more organised we are behind the scenes, the more creative we can be when it matters.

Our Monthly Planning Process

Every month we map out:

  • Our shoots
  • Editing time
  • Meetings and commitments
  • Family time and holidays

We know when we’re away, when the football calendar takes over, and when we need dedicated work time. Having a plan means we’re not constantly trying to catch up. Instead, we can actually enjoy the family days we’ve planned without feeling guilty that we should be sitting behind a computer.

Brand Photography

Why Consistency Matters for Your Business Too

This is exactly why we created The Content Collective.

The Problem With One-Off Content

One-off photography sessions are fantastic, but many businesses find themselves back where they started a few months later—scrambling for new images because the content cupboard is empty.

How The Content Collective Works

The Content Collective is designed to take that pressure away. By planning seasonal or monthly shoots throughout the year, we’re able to create a steady stream of fresh, on-brand photography that keeps marketing moving without the last-minute rush.

It’s the same principle we use in our own business: planning ahead creates breathing space.

Creativity Needs Room to Breathe

Some of our best ideas don’t arrive while we’re sitting at a desk. They happen:

  • During a family walk
  • Watching one of the boys play football
  • Exploring somewhere new
  • Chatting over coffee after a client meeting

Taking time away from work isn’t stepping back from creativity—it’s often where creativity grows. That’s something we’ve learned to value.

Progress Over Perfection

Running a business with children at home means some days everything goes to plan. Other days it doesn’t. There are interrupted phone calls, unexpected changes, forgotten packed lunches and the occasional moment where we both look at each other and wonder how we’re keeping all the plates spinning.

The truth is, we probably aren’t spinning them perfectly. But we’re showing up consistently for our clients, creating work we’re proud of and making memories with our family at the same time. That’s enough.

Looking Ahead: Planning for Autumn and Beyond

As summer starts to wind down, September often brings a fresh sense of momentum for businesses. It’s the perfect time to start thinking ahead to:

  • Autumn campaigns
  • Christmas marketing
  • New year strategies

The brands that stay consistent are rarely the ones creating content at the last minute. They’re the ones who plan ahead, invest in quality visuals and build a library of content that supports their marketing all year round. That’s exactly what we love helping businesses do.

Key Takeaways for Your Business and Life

  • Don’t underestimate the power of planning
  • Make time for the people who matter
  • Protect space for creativity
  • Don’t be afraid to step away from your desk

Because the best stories—both in life and in business—happen when there’s room to live them.
